Short link vs full UTM URL

A short link is for sharing; a full UTM URL is what analytics on a site you control actually reads.

Two jobs, one destination

The full UTM URL carries utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign so Shopify analytics can group the visit. The short link wraps that long string for a caption, QR code or SMS. If you shorten a clean product URL with no UTM, you get a pretty link and an unlabelled session. This is not a ranking of unnamed shorteners.

Order of operations

Clean leftover parameters, build UTM, open the product page, then shorten. Appending UTM onto a short URL usually never reaches the storefront. Some shorteners also drop query strings on redirect—test the final address bar, not only the first hop.

When you should not shorten

If the ad platform already wraps your URL, a second shortener adds another redirect that can strip UTM. If legal or finance wants a readable destination in the screenshot, keep the full UTM URL. Amazon listing links often should not wear Shopify-style UTM at all.

How CrossKit splits the job

UTM Link Builder writes the query string. Short Link Generator is optional after that. URL Parameter Cleaner helps when an old click ID is already on the path. None of these tools invent click counts or star ratings.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a short link hide UTM from analytics?

It hides the string from humans. The destination site should still receive UTM if the redirect preserves the query. Always test.

Can I put UTM on the short domain itself?

Rebuild from the real product URL. UTM on a short domain often never maps to the Shopify session you care about.

Does Short Link Generator replace UTM Link Builder?

No. Build UTM first. Shorten only if the caption needs a shorter string.
