Shopify product image best practices
Keep a consistent aspect ratio, enough pixels for zoom, JPEG for photos, and honest color and count. Resize, then compress in the browser.
Theme width is the real pixel target
If the product image renders around 1200 px, export a bit more for retina—often 1600–2400 px—not 8K. Resize pixels first; that saves more than crushing quality on a huge canvas. Keep a consistent aspect ratio so collection grids do not break. Shopify can transform images after upload, but 20 MB originals still slow admin, backups and apps.
Format and honesty
JPEG or WebP for photos, PNG for graphics and tiny type. Color and pack count in the gallery must match the description. A 15-inch sleeve in the photo and a 13-inch line in the copy creates returns even when the theme is fast. Alt text should name the object, not stuff keywords.
Browser prep, not a random host
CrossKit Image Resizer then Image Compressor prepares exports in the browser. Keep masters outside the export folder. Do not upload screenshots of already-compressed JPEGs. This toolkit does not invent a Shopify partnership or a store-speed star rating.
GIFs, heroes and thumbs
Animated banners are heavy; replace with short video or a still when the theme allows. Collection thumbnails can be smaller than PDP zoom shots—do not use those thumbs as the only master. After upload, check the product page on a phone and zoom the main image.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Shopify CDN make compression unnecessary?
It helps delivery. You still want reasonable masters for admin speed and app limits. Oversized uploads waste time even when the storefront is optimized.
What format should I upload?
High-quality JPEG or PNG masters are safe. If the theme serves WebP, Shopify can derive it. Keep the master you can recompress.
Should every product use the same aspect ratio?
Inside one collection, yes if you care about a clean grid. Mixed ratios belong in separate templates or they will look broken.
