How do I resize product images for marketplaces?

Resize product images for marketplaces by matching the channel’s recommended pixel size and aspect ratio, using a high-resolution original, then exporting without upscaling a small photo. Amazon, Shopify and TikTok Shop all prefer sharp, large enough images; they do not need 8,000px files. CrossKit Image Resizer sets the dimensions; Image Compressor then reduces weight for upload.

Upscaling a 600px photo to 2000px does not create detail. Reshoot or accept a smaller display.

Steps

  1. Read the current size guidance for that channel

Minimums change. White background rules are separate from pixel counts.

  2. Work from the original

Resize exports, not already-resized JPEGs, when you can.

  3. Pick a longest-side target

Often 1600–2500px covers zoom without giant files.

  4. Keep aspect ratio consistent inside a catalog

1:1 vs 3:4 vs 16:9—pick per channel, then stay there.

  5. Compress after resize

    Pixels first, quality second.

  6. Export, then compress, then name by channel

sku_amazon_main.jpg, sku_shopify_pdp.jpg, sku_tiktok_cover.jpg. The names prevent uploading a 9:16 video crop as an Amazon main image.

Match pixels and aspect, never upscale a small photo

Read current size guidance for that channel; minimums change. White-background rules are separate from pixel counts. Work from the original. A longest side of about 1600–2500px often covers zoom without giant files. Keep aspect ratio consistent inside a catalog (1:1 vs 3:4 vs 16:9). Compress after resize: pixels first, quality second. One original, three exports

Phone photo 4032×3024 can become an Amazon square white main around 2000×2000 JPEG, a Shopify long-side ~2048 to match the theme, and a 9:16 crop for TikTok video while the Shop PDP still gets a clean product frame. Do not crop out required white space on Amazon main images; lifestyle crops belong in secondary slots. On the web, pixel dimensions matter more than the DPI tag—do not chase print 300 DPI for a storefront. Batch resize with the same aspect rules. GIF Compressor is only for real animation.

How CrossKit fits this job

Image Resizer sets the longest side and aspect. Image Compressor then reduces weight. Export per channel from one master: Amazon square main, Shopify theme width, TikTok cover crop. Do not upscale a small photo. Name files by SKU and channel so the wrong crop does not land in the main slot.

Example

Phone photo 4032×3024. Amazon main: square crop on white, export ~2000×2000 JPEG. Shopify: maybe 2048 on the long side to match the theme. TikTok creative: a 9:16 safe crop for the video, but the Shop PDP still wants a clean product frame. Three exports, one original.

Common mistakes

  • Cropping out required white space on Amazon main images

Lifestyle crops belong in secondary slots.

  • One-size export for every channel

You will either waste bytes or fail a minimum.

  • Resizing an already-compressed thumbnail into a main image

You enlarge artifacts. Go back to the camera or raw export.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use 72 DPI or 300 DPI?

On the web, pixel dimensions matter more than the DPI tag. Export enough pixels; do not chase print DPI for a storefront.

Can I batch resize?

Yes. Keep aspect rules consistent across the batch.

Should every marketplace get the same pixel size?

No. One-size exports either waste bytes or fail a minimum. Export per channel from the same master.

Can I batch resize mixed aspect ratios?

You can, but collection grids will look broken. Sort by aspect, then batch. Do not auto-stretch.
