Amazon Restricted Categories & Product Approval: A Seller's Guide to Gating
What "restricted category" actually means
Amazon gates certain categories (Grocery, Health & Personal Care, Jewelry, Automotive, etc.) behind approval. Until you are ungated, you cannot create listings there — even with a perfect product. Understanding gating is step one before you source inventory at scale.
Categories most often gated
- Grocery & Gourmet Food — invoices + FDA where applicable
- Health & Household — certificates, authorized distributor proof
- Jewelry & Watches — authenticity and quality checks
- Automotive & Powersports — compliance documents
- Toys & Games (Q4) — seasonal ungating in peak season
Documents that get you ungated faster
1. Wholesale invoices
Amazon wants recent B2B invoices showing 10–30+ units from an authorized supplier, with your business name and address. Blurred or edited invoices are rejected instantly.
2. Authorization letters
If you are a reseller, a brand authorization letter proves you can legally sell the product.
3. Certifications
UL/CE/FDA certificates for electronics, supplements, and children's items. Missing certs mean a hard block.
Common mistakes that trigger suppression
- Using a personal-name invoice instead of the registered business name.
- Listing a restricted product before approval (auto-suppressed).
- Stock images copied from the brand (copyright risk).
- Mismatched product IDs (UPC/EAN) vs the catalog.
